Carlos Hevia, 76, died March 12, 2024. A Cuban immigrant who was grateful for the freedoms offered in this country; Carlos proudly served in the U.S. Army. He continued his life of public service and retired from the Illinois State Police as a highly decorated Captain; one of the first Hispanics - if not the first - to achieve that rank. After that he worked for the US Department of Justice, with assignments in Costa Rica and El Salvador, the Cook County States’ Attorney Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Carlos’ incredibly accomplished career included leading a multi-agency task force on domestic terrorism, overseeing operations of a multi-jurisdictional drug enforcement unit, serving the public on drug awareness and gang violence, and rescuing children who were trafficked across the border. He was a founding member and past president of the Hispanics in Illinois State Law Enforcement Association (HISLEA), and member of many law enforcement related organizations. He risked his life for others, but also served as a mentor and guide to so many.
Described by loved ones as “salt of the earth” and “one of the funniest people I knew,” Carlos will be missed by those who knew him. He leaves behind two daughters, five grandchildren, two sisters, nieces, and nephews. Though Carlos received many awards throughout his years of service, Carlos was most proud to serve - his family and friends, the public and his country.
A memorial service will be held on March 27, 2024, from 4p-8p at Pietryka Funeral Home located at 5734 W. Diversey Ave., Chicago, IL. 60639. A memorial service will be planned in South Florida in the coming months.
